If you follow us on Facebook or Twitter, you’ll see we post a lot of links to articles about how to take better photos. The better the photo the less likely you are to hit delete, erasing it from your phone or camera and sometimes your memory. Better photos also make for better sharing via cards, calendars and books.

Below are a few tips pulled directly from articles we’ve linked to (and the links to them) I’ve found helpful in my quest to improve my photography.

Contrast

“Keep it simple! Just as too many cooks spoil the pot, too many visual elements are just as certain to ruin to the photo. Limit the number of elements and subjects in your compositions to what you can easily comprehend in a glance. It runs counter to logic, but the human eye lingers longer over the simpler shot while often “sliding off” more intricate shots. So stick to a maximum of three or four fields of color or texture at any one time.” (Pipedreamergrey, http://www.brighthub.com/multimedia/photography/articles/12793.aspx)

Color

““Black and white is the best way to learn photography, and in my experience, it’s the photography we all go back to,” said Mr. Versace. “If I had my druthers, I’d never shoot another color photograph as long as I live.” That is because without color to “distract,” he said, a photographer has to learn composition and the skill of capturing a story.” (Roy Furchgott, http://gadgetwise.blogs.nytimes.com/2011/10/03/five-tips-to-get-great-black-and-white-photos/)

Lighting

“I love lighting and it impacts the scene. I also love how I can manipulate the lights to achieve the results I’m looking for.” (Brice Burton, http://weeklyphototips.blogspot.com/2011/10/check-out-these-images.html)

Pose vs. Candid

“Have fun! — Posed images are nice, but your friends and family want to see the real you. Take plenty of images, and even consider using some funny outtakes to show your family’s silly side.” (Kristy Korcz, http://www.geeksugar.com/Photography-Tips-Holiday-Cards-20245326)

Reflection

“Do rainy days and Sundays get you down? Don’t let them: embrace the photo opportunities afforded by the puddles. The rain is as much a part of the story of your holiday as the food you ate and the sights you saw. Use reflections wherever possible for a different take on otherwise well-known scenes.” (Nik Rawlinson, http://reviews.cnet.co.uk/cameras-and-camcorders/50-essential-photography-tips-50006080/)

Captions

Captions aren’t technically part of the photo taking process, but they are important in recording history. A short blurb containing some key information will be the trigger you need to remember the photo’s significance down the road. Nothing to quote here, simply something I’ve learned since becoming a mother. But as a mother, in 5 years are you going to remember this picture was her first taste of chocolate?

Create a photo blurb: First taste of chocolate

Hope you find something helpful in these tips and links. Happy snapping.

Halloween is a little over a month away. How will you make it spooktacular this year? Below is a quick celebration checklist to ensure you’re ready.

Costumes or Orange & Black apparel
- Check out your local big box stores, but other great places for costumes include Costco, Cracker Barrel, Gymboree and party supply stores.
Candy or other treats
- Start clipping coupons now as candy gets expensive fast. Other great treats include pencils, erasers, travel tooth brushes and toothpaste, fruit snacks, Little Debbie Pumpkin Delights and microwave popcorn.

Decorations and lights
- Get the box out from the attic and basement and decorate. Maybe pick up a new decoration this year (I buy one a year so it doesn’t get expensive).
- Consider candy corn lights (like Christmas lights) for your now leafless trees.
- Luminaries are cheap, look great and help little costume crews find their way to your porch.

Pumpkins, hay bales and foddershock
- Pumpkins for porch décor and for carving (just don’t carve too soon).
- Pumpkin carving kits.
- Hay and Fodder make great outdoor décor – and “hey” your scarecrow needs something to sit on or lean against.

Halloween Photo Cards or Photo Invites
- Dress the kids up early and take a few pics to send photo cards to grandma and grandpa and other distant relatives. Who doesn’t like getting cards?
- Planning a Halloween party? Make it more festive with a photo card invite.

Halloween Greeting

What do you do for Halloween preparation that isn’t included in this list?

Be sure to have a camera in hand for all of your Halloween planning, decorating, pumpkin picking, parties and trick-or-treating. And, please remember the Halloween convention: a lit porch light means you’re accepting trick-or-treaters and a light that’s off means you’re not.

Have a Bootiful Halloween!

Standing out in job interviews these days takes a lot more than fancy resume paper. Now it’s all about showcasing your achievements. With Inkubook’s Portfolio Photo Book, you can organize a career’s worth of highlights into an impressive collection of projects, samples and successes.

You don’t even have to worry about references. Share all the positive feedback from former employers and coworkers by inviting them to comment right in your portfolio photo book.

In an interview, presentation is everything, so organize your portfolio photo book in the way that best illustrates what you want to convey.

If you’re trying to illustrate growth, layout your photo book chronologically.

If you’re doing a straight showcase of your work, then present projects like a story with a beginning, middle and end.

Know your portfolio like the back of your hand. Have a few go-to pieces of standout work that you can flip to if your interview gets cut short. That way you can quickly say, “This is the quality of work I can bring to your company.”

Don’t get stuck at your next interview trying to tell someone how good your work is. Let them see it for themselves with a portfolio photo book, and in no time at all you’ll be leaving a lasting impression.

We live in a visual culture. To truly make an impact on customers and potential clients, you need to show people what you can do.

But you don’t have to be a professional photographer or artist to create a quality portfolio of your work. Inkubook can provide all the tools for you to design the perfect business photo book to showcase whatever it is that your company does best.

Start with the photos you’ve taken of your best products or most impressive projects, select the style of book you want, place your photos, add text descriptions and testimonials from satisfied customers, decide how many copies you want, checkout and voila – you’ll have a professionally printed and bound, full-color promotional book in about a week.

Keep copies of the book in your waiting room, show it off during meetings with clients, or hand out copies when you network – it will certainly stand out more than the average business card!

Businesses That Can Benefit From a Photo Book

When creating a portfolio or business book, you’ll likely want to order several copies at once. Order in batches to save more. For example, save 15% on orders of 10 – 199 copies of the same book; save 20% on orders of 200 – 599 copies of the same book; or save 25% on orders of greater than 599 copies of the same book. Just enter code INKUBUNCH during checkout.

Let’s face it, the tried-and-true, stand-in-a-row-and-smile style wedding photos are nice to have, but do they really capture the personalities of you and your better half?

With a wedding album from Inkubook, you make the call on what shots go into your own album. And you get to personalize it in ways that your average album just can’t accommodate.

Tips for Making Your Personalized Wedding Photo Book

Never worry about yellowing, fading or loss: Clip your wedding announcement from the newspaper and scan it to include in the photo book. Do the same with other paper goods, such as your save-the-date, invitation and program. See if the best man and maid of honor are willing to give you their hand-written notes from their toasts, too!

Experience your big day from another angle: Ask friends and family to include their email addresses in the guest book; then invite them to upload their snapshots so that you can include them in your book.

Don’t miss any special moments: Ask a friend or family member to capture candid moments – the tiny groomsman and flower girl napping in the corner; you and grandma cutting a rug to “We Are Family;” the happy couple driving away in their decorated car.

Give it the 3-D feel of a keepsake scrapbook by scanning small items such as the bride’s garter, the groom’s tie, a flower from the bouquet, lace from the dress, etc.

Other Ways to Use Inkubook for Your Wedding

Use our Great Big Square style in place of or to supplement the traditional album with a more personalized Inkubook.

Put together photos from your engagement shoot for a guest book that you’ll actually want to display after the wedding day.

No matter where you plan to go, your first trip as husband and wife is sure to be memorable. Capture the excitement in a honeymoon travel book.

MORE IDEAS

Create unforgettable thank-you gifts for parents, grandparents or members of the wedding party.

Think ahead to the first anniversary. Start uploading photos from your honeymoon and other more basic snapshots that will remind you of your first year together.

No wedding coming up? No problem. Gather old wedding pics and mementos and create an anniversary album for parents or grandparents.

As an alternative to a wedding slideshow, compile all your favorite and funniest photos of each other into a Mini Brag book that you can incorporate into your table centerpieces. Buy as few as 10 copies and you’re eligible for Inkubook’s volume discount of 15%.
